Pouch Packing: Process, Machines and Price in Nepal

Packaging is the act of enclosing a product by some packaging material for storage, transportation, distribution and use. Packaging not only protects the products inside from damage, but also acts as a 'silent salesperson' by enticing customers through attractive design and branding.

Packaging has evolved significantly over time. One of the earliest packaging material is Glass. It dates back to around 7000 BC, with industrial production in Egypt in 1500 B.C. The blowpipe technique, invented around 300 B.C., allowed molten glass to be shaped into round containers. By 20th century, machines started mass-producing glass bottles. Glass is fragile and needs to be handled with care but, gives a premium feel to the packaged products. While plastics and metal took over, glass remains valued for premium products.

Paper is considered as the oldest flexible packaging. It was first produced and used in China at around 200 B.C. In earlier times, paper was produced by pouring a mixture of Mulberry tree fibers onto a porous cloth, then pressing and drying them. Currently, paper is produced from flax and wood pulp. By the 1800s, machines made paper bags and cardboard boxes common. Though plastics reduced its use, paper has remained as the sustainable alternative.

Tin-plated iron first appeared around the 14th century. In 1809, food preservation in sealed tin containers revolutionized packaging. Aluminum foil trays and cans came around in the mid 20th century. The strength, durability and ability to recycle make metals sought-after for packaging but, their high cost limit their usage.

Plastics emerged in the 19th century but, became omnipresent after the second world war. Polythene bags became the go-to option for carrying goods to packaging foods and products in sachets. Plastics dominate today for their versatility but, pose a serious environmental concern.

Despite the advancements in packaging materials, the method of packaging itself has become equally important. In today’s fast-paced production environment, manual packaging can be slow and limit production rate. As production-oriented businesses grow in Nepal, the need of efficient packaging machines has also grown. Pouch packaging machines address this need by automating the packaging process, helping Nepali businesses increase output, reduce labor dependency, and maintain hygiene and uniformity in their products.

This article discusses about the types, working process and specifications of pouch packaging machines and their availability and price in Nepal.

Process of Pouch Packaging

Pouch packaging machines are industrial packaging machines used to form pouches from film rolls, fill them with products such as food, drinks, and pharmaceuticals, and seal them into individual units.

Pouch packaging is usually a six-step process:

  1. Film Feeding: The machine is loaded with a roll of laminated, food-grade packaging film. Some machines may also print designs while unwinding the film.
  2. Forming: The flat dual-layered film is folded and sealed vertically to form a tube or flat pouch structure. The bottom end is sealed to form the base of the pouch.
  3. Filling System: Before filling, pouches are opened by blowing air through them. Then, precise doses of products are filled into the formed pouches by a metering system. Filling systems vary according to the type of product, as listed below:
    • Volumetric Filling: Grains, Pulses and Snacks
    • Auger Filling: Powders such as flour and spices
    • Liquid Filling: Juice, Oil, Water
  4. Sealing: After the pouches are filled, they move into the sealing stage. There are various methods of sealing, like ultrasonic sealing, threaded sealing and heat sealing. The most common method is heat sealing. When the top of the current pouch is sealed, the base of the next pouch is also created.
  5. Cutting: In the cutting stage, filled pouches are separated into individual units. Cutting is done through mechanical or pneumatic cutters in a straight or zig-zag pattern.
  6. Output: The finished pouches are either manually collected from the machine or automatically transported to the packaging unit through the conveyor system.

Pouch packaging machines replace manual labour, maintain consistency and improve efficiency. This makes them an essential solution for modern food and manufacturing businesses, especially in growing markets like Nepal.

Types of Pouch Packaging Machines Available in Nepal

Pouch Packaging machines are generally of two types:

  • Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) Machines: These machines use packaging film rolls to form pouches. These pouches are filled with the product to be packaged and sealed.
  • Pre Made Pouch Packaging Machines: These machines take pre-made pouches. Such pouches are opened, filled and sealed.
